About web directories
At this moment in time web directories serve as an easy way for website owners to obtain links for their websites. What is a value of these links? Well, that depends on what directory the links are coming from. So, what makes a good web directory? There are several basic, very important factors to consider. Today there are probably tens of thousands web directories on the Internet, and these factors are crucial in determining which directories are the valuable ones. Here are the 9 factors to consider:
Nine basic quality factors
- Age. Six year or older directories are worth the consideration, if younger that six years, probably not.
- Google Page Rank. Has page rank (PR) of 4 or higher.
- Indexing. Fully indexed by search engines, including all categories and deep sub-categories.
- Number of categories and sub-categories. Low number of categories, or empty categories, tell us a directory is undeveloped.
- Speed, design, and hosting. These 3 factors combined tell us a lot about how a website, web directory in this case, is managed. If load speed is very slow, design not professional, or directory is hosted with thousands of other websites, it is not worth considering.
- Edited by real editors. Automatic submissions should be disregarded right away. Websites need to be reviewed by editors.
- Direct links. Any other form of links is unacceptable.
- Paid review web directories only - not acceptiong all submissions. Free web directories have many problems, including beiing overcrowded, accepting "bad" websites, poorly managed, asking for backling in return, slow review times, etc ...
- Not spammy. The less advertising the better. Some advertising is ok, but if a web directory is full of banners and advertisements we would not reccomend it.

Submiting to a large number of web directories is just contraproductive. Insted the focus should be on a small number of high quality ones. The biggest web directories DMOZ, Yahoo Directory, and Business.com are not included in this list.
